Ålesund es una ciudad construida sobre siete islas, Hessa, Nørvøy, Oksenøy, Ellingsøy, Humla, Tørla y Aspøy, siendo esta última, la más visitada por su arquitectura.
Ålesund está ubicada entre Bergen y Trondheim, en la provincia de Møre og Romsdal, y tiene aproximadamente 47,000 habitantes.
Cómo llegar a Ålesund, Noruega
Hay diferentes maneras de llegar a esta preciosa ciudad, sin embargo, tomar un avión puede ser la más cómoda. El aeropuerto se encuentra en la isla de Vigra, a 17 kilómetros del centro de la ciudad. Hay varias compañías aéreas que te llevarán allí, entre las más populares están: Scandinavian Airlines y Norwegian.
Desde el aeropuerto, puedes llegar al centro de la ciudad tomando el autobús (Flybussen), por lo general el horario coindice con el de los vuelos. Este tiene varias paradas, si te diriges al centro puedes llegar hasta la parada Ålesund Rutebilstasjon (25 minutos aproximadamente de recorrido).
Si tienes mucho equipaje, quizás optes por tomar un taxi, en ese caso, el recorrido durará unos 15 minutos, pero recuerda que seguro va a ser más caro; aproximadamente unas 500 coronas noruegas (50 euros). Las compañías de taxi más conocidas son: Ring Taxi y Ålesund Taxi.
Historia de Ålesund
Ålesund está marcada por una catástrofe, la cual cambió la historia de esta ciudad.
La noche del 23 de enero de 1904, un gran incendio consumió y destruyó 850 casas, prácticamente toda el área central de la ciudad, y obligó a gran parte de la población a abandonar la ciudad de manera inmediata.
Afortunadamente, solo una persona murió en este devastador incendio, pero significó que más de 10000 personas se quedaran sin hogar durante el duro invierno noruego.
Razón por la cual, el emperador Guillermo II de Alemania, quien solía veranear en Ålesund, envió cuatro barcos con material para construir albergues temporales.
Tras un periodo de planificación, la ciudad fue reconstruida entre 1904 y 1907 siguiendo los lineamientos del Art Nouveau, rompiendo con todas las normas anteriores, y dándole un aire totalmente nuevo a la ciudad. De esta manera se convirtió en la cuna del modernismo en Noruega.

Pasea por las calles del Art Nouveau
Conociendo sus historia, es imprescindible fijarse en toda la arquitectura, adornos y detalles de las casas de la ciudad. Incluso, pon atención a las tapas de las alcantarillas y las calles que todavía permanecen adoquinadas. Seguro te llevarás gratas sorpresas.
La calle peatonal Kongens Gate es otro lugar que debes visitar, ya que observarás y aprenderás sobre la reconstrucción de la ciudad. Fíjate detenidamente en las fachadas de los números 19, 25 y 28 y camina hasta la casa 10B, reconocida como la casa más estrecha de Ålesund.
Avanza hasta el puente de Hellebroa para poder observar unas panorámicas maravillosas, y aprovecha para ver las fachadas de las casas 1 -3 de Lorkenesgata, las cuales se mantienen intactas desde 1906.
Aprende en Svaneapoteket
Y por supuesto, debes visitar la farmacia Svaneapoteket, en el nro. 16 de Apotekergata, la cual alberga desde el 2003 el Centro de Art Noveau Jugend y se ha convertido en el Centro Nacional del Modernismo en Noruega.
El interior se conserva prácticamente igual que en 1907 y es un espacio que presenta exposiciones permanentes con videos y fotografías sobre el origen del Art Nouveau en Ålesund y sobre el trágico incendio que afectó a la ciudad.
Es uno de los puntos de la ciudad más bonitos y que seguro disfrutarás por sus casas de color amarillo, las cuales se reflejan sobre el agua. Este canal separa la isla de Norvoya, donde se encuentra la ciudad nueva, y la isla de Aspoya, donde está ubicada la ciudad antigua.
Debes estar pendiente también de algunas esculturas muy interesantes que podrás encontrar: Fiskergutten, la más grande de todas, es un niño pescador que representa el futuro y la juventud, y Sildekona, preciosa escultura construida en honor a las mujeres que trabajaban en la industria del arenque.

Comprar productos locales en el mercado de Kiperviktorgen
Es un mercado pequeño, pero muy colorido y acogedor, donde podrás hacer algunas compras de productos locales y pasear entre los puestos. Te recomendamos que lo visites un sábado, ya que ese día el mercado tiene mucho más movimiento y está más animado.
Asciende al mirador de Aksla
Para cerrar con broche de oro, debes subir a lo alto del mirador de Aksla (Fjellstua), el cual está a 130 metros sobre el mar.
Puedes subir a pie, en coche o autobús, pero recuerda que el ascenso incluye 418 escalones, sin embargo, una vez en la cima, disfrutarás de unas de las mejores vistas panorámicas que puedes disfrutar en los fiordos noruegos y de la ciudad sobre las islas. Incluso, si subes por los escalones, puedes hacer una parada en el mirador de Strykerjernet.
Aquí tienes otro dato, antes de llegar al parking del mirador, puedes visitar también los restos de los bunkers de la II Guerra Mundial, los cuales fueron construidos en la época en la cual Alemania ocupó Noruega.
Impresiónate con los fiordos noruegos en Ålesund
La naturaleza está muy presente en Ålesund, ya que la ciudad está muy próxima a los conocidos fiordos Hjørund y Geiranger. Por lo cual puedes:
- Organizar un crucero por Geiranger, declarado Patrimonio de la UNESCO, y es uno de los fiordos más bellos de Noruega. Incluso, te recomendamos realizar una ruta en kayak, seguro te fascinará y te divertirás mucho.
- Recorre la popular e impresionante escalera del troll, conocida como Trollstigen.
- También puedes tomar un barco por el Fiordo de Hjørundfjord, uno de los más largos de Noruega.
- Puedes ascender hasta algunas de las cimas de más de 2000 metros de los Alpes deSunnmøre. Son el lugar ideal para practicar senderismo y apreciar unas vistas deslumbrantes por el contraste entre los fiordos, las montañas, el mar y si vas en invierno, la nieve.

Si cuentas con un poco más de tiempo, puedes visitar la Isla Runde, hogar de 150 personas y medio millón de aves. Lo más recomendable es visitarla durante el periodo de anidación de las aves (de febrero a agosto).
San Juan en Ålesund
En Noruega también se celebra San Juan o conocido como Jonsok o Sankthans, donde los noruegos prenden hogueras en las orillas del mar y de ríos para darle la bienvenida al solsticio de verano, junto a su familia y amigos.
Ålesund es reconocida por haber construido la mayor hoguera del mundo, el Slinningsbålet, en el 2010 (alcanzó 40 metros de altura). Así que, si quieres experimentar esta tradicional fiesta, debes organizar tu viaje durante el verano, específicamente en junio. Seguro será una noche inolvidable.
Gastronomía de Ålesund, Noruega
Al estar ubicada en la costa, Ålesund se ha convertido en la capital pesquera de Noruega, por lo que la oferta de mariscos y pescados dura todo el año y seguro deleitará tu paladar con su frescura y sabor. Aquí tienes algunos consejos:
- Prueba la popular sopa cremosa de pescado. Puedes ir al puerto deportivo de Brosundet y seguro encontrarás algunas opciones.
- Si viajas entre enero y abril, no puedes dejar de probar los reconocidos skrei, una clase de bacalao ártico, el cual se sirve como delicatessen.
- Ålesund es reconocido por tener una larga tradición de productos que se fabrican de manera local, entre ellos puedes encontrar el klippfisk, una especialidad de bacalao seco y salado. Este es el ingrediente principal para la elaboración del tradicional bacalao portugués. Puedes buscarlo en las cafeterías y restaurantes de Ålesund, que seguro ofertan este plato tradicional.
